Day 4!
We woke up outside St. Louis, and went down to take a picture as close as we could in front of the famed St. Louis arch.
Because of construction this is as close as we could get. This morning there was a severe rainstorm, which lasted all night. Dad says he's never driven the car in that much rain, and I can see why. It leaked everywhere and we were soaked. Like a screen door on a submarine.
Then the rain stopped and we got breakfast at the Donuts Drive-in.
By afternoon we made it to one of the biggest attractions along Route 66, the Meramac Caverns. When Route 66 was constructed this place became a huge tourist destination. The Caverns themselves are purported to be a hideout for Jesse James and his gang. The caves were also used to store Ammunition and supplies for the confederates during the Civil War.
Tours started every half hour.
One time the sheriffs raided Jesse James and his gang, and Jesse swam the underground river and came out a mile away into the Meramac River and escaped.
My dad asked the tour guide if there were fish in the underground river. She said yes, but they had evolved over time to live in darkness and are blind. She said they don't come near the entrance of the cave because it's too bright. Then my dad said, "Well if they're blind, why does it matter?" She didn't respond.
The cave systems go on for miles and miles but we are only allowed to see a small portion.
This used to be an ancient waterfall. Scientists believe that the water stopped flowing here about 24 Million years ago.
This was a surprise, an electronic's store named "Jerry's" Best photo op of the day!
Along with my dads favorite things… giant statues. This is the worlds largest rocking chair.
