Mural in Springfield, Missouri.
Day 5
Well we thought the worst weathered days were behind us, But on day 5 we spent the entire day in the rain. Our first stop was at the Gay Perita Sinclair gas station, 25 miles outside of Springfield Missouri, owned and operated by a very friendly Gary Turner.
Here is stop in Galena, Kansas. We in Kansas now! Notice in the background the life says "Toe Mater" from the Disney movie cars along side cousin "Toe Tater" who actually inspired the character from the movie, and predates the film.
Also in Galena, Kansas, The Haunted Bordello. The true story is that the whores lured men into the Bordello, murdered a bunch of them and buried their bodies in an unearthed mine behind the house. The women ended up in prison, now it's the most haunted place along Route 66.
We stopped for Lunch at Ku ku Burgers. Once part of a larger chain, this is the only remaining location, and is a landmark on Route 66. On To Oklahoma!
Then we came across a strange piece of the original Route 66 from 1922, called the '9 Foot Road', or the "Sidewalk highway" is only 9 feet wide. It's barely wide enough for a single car to pass. I know cars were smaller back then but I can't imagine they were this small. The most astounding part is that this stretch of road still extends 14 miles, but a newer Route bypasses it now.
Now we in Oklahoma and we come across one of the most recognizable and iconic landmarks of Route 66. The Great Blue Whale of Catoosa, Oklahoma. What was once a private dock and pond, became the center of town for people in Catoosa. Travelers along Route 66 were free to stop by, fish and swim once it became a public institution.
Well onward into our next day, we pray for better weather! Check back tomorrow for more updates.
